Hotel Magnolia
Hotel Magnolia is Christopher Davis's concept for a multi-purpose commercial building in Costa Rica. After many trips backpacking around the country, he enjoyed the hostel culture and the way he was treated while traveling and staying in places like this. The eco-tourism, mixed with surf and organic lifestyles, created such a wonderful, welcoming, environment for him. He stayed in many hostels and hotels, taking notes of what he did and did not like.
When he returned from one of these trips, he decided to design his ultimate dream hostel/hotel. He wanted to design something small and that could be built relatively easily; a building that was functional as a hotel, hostel, restaurant, and retail. He designed a building where he could both live and be part of the community enjoying Pura Vida.
Christopher designed an architectural concept integrated with the business concept. This is a commercial space with a modern flavor, that could fit in on a main street in a beach-townt. It is is designed for a small quarter acre lot, and could be in a densely populated beach town. It is built with standard Costa Rican construction methods; concrete, steel, and simple engineering with stucco, teak, and tile finishes. The aesthetic is sleek, sexy, modern and cool.
On the ground floor, there is a sandwich shop and adjacent office, and hostel rooms in a dorm-setting, adjacent to the recreation areas. There is a large front patio for the sandwich shop seating and hostel lounge.Full-time Hostel guests will receive free breakfast sandwiches and hotel guests will have free sandwich passes included as part of their stay. security will be stationed in an office nook.
Upstairs there are hotel accommodations and the owner's private live-in apartment.
Entertainment will be booked weekly to perform on the stage near the pool. The onsite sandwich shop will provide food and local artists will showcase their work in both the inside gallery and outside in the public areas. There will be private reservations for rooftop events like local artists' openings, guest chefs, and press events. Surfboard and bike rentals will be available at the front office for guests.
The goal with this business and building is to create a self-sustainable lifestyle that takes very little management because of its size and multiple potential revenue streams, viable at all seasons. It will provide jobs for local Tico residents in the town, contributing to the economy of the community.
